This podcast is part of an ongoing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessenglishpod.com\/learningcenter2\/category\/negotiating\/\">series on negotiation skills<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bargaining is the process of swapping or trading concessions &#8211; in other words, &#8220;You give me something, and I&#8217;ll give you something in return.&#8221; This is also called making offers and counter-offers. He is using this as a negotiating tactic to get a better discount.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\" onclick=\"showhide('381'); return(false);\"><strong>2) <\/strong>Tony suggests a way of helping Paul get a higher discount. What is it? <\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"381\" style=\"display: none\"> <font color=\"#ff0000\">Tony suggests Paul combine his current order with an order for a future project. This will increase the overall quantity of Tony&#8217;s order, and thus will allow Tony to increase Tony&#8217;s quantity discount.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\" onclick=\"showhide('382'); return(false);\"><strong>3) <\/strong> When Tony says to Paul, &#8220;You drive a hard bargain!&#8221; what does he mean? <\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"382\" style=\"display: none\"> <font color=\"#ff0000\">When Tony says to Tony, &#8220;You drive a hard bargain!&#8221; he means that Paul is a tough negotiator &#8211; for example, Paul has not only asked for a large quantity discount, but also for a prompt payment discount.
